Rubs, Creams, and Potions!

What rubs to you use on your horses and why? Let us know in the comments what works for you!

We have a few that we use on horses for different reasons: Emu Oil with Turmeric, Aloe Vera with Manuka Honey, Equine Super Goo…why all the different ones? Here’s a quick break down:

1. Emu Oil gets used on horses who need a good massage before and after work. These horses may have sore or tender parts of their backs, necks, or legs. The combination of the emu oil and turmeric with a strong massage helps with pain and inflammation. The massaging encourages faster healing and recovery of muscles and keeps the horses happier.

2. The Aloe Vera with Manuka rub is used more on horses who have a rub or scar that is healing up as well as any that have flaky skin in summer due to sun exposure. Often we then put filter back over these areas to give the rub/scar/sunburn a bit of protection so it can heal. This rub is soothing and encourages the skin to heal smooth.

3. Equine Super Goo is a newer product. We have used this on horses who have been in scraps with each other (or had a run in with a fence), as well as on small cuts, abrasions, and mud fever. Our over all experience with this is that is easy to use and apply and that is speeds up with healing process.

Ultimately it can feel like you are throwing money away if you only use a product for a week or two and think it will help your horses. The key in the success of any product or intervention it to use it consistently and over a long period of time. Depending on the problem it can take a very long time (we’re talking a months or even over a year) to see the results you are wanting – skin takes a long time to heel if it has been exposed to damage over a long period, and then the hair can take longer again to look like it should.

Our advice – be patient, be consistent, and don’t think the creams will do it all – Massage helps and stimulates healing, correct fitting gear helps, dealing with underlying health problems helps…and all together work towards keeping horses at their best.
